About

We are pleased to invite the scientific community to the 6th Latin American Symposium on Ichnology (VI Simposio Latinoamericano de Icnología, SLIC 2027), to be held from May 3 to 8, 2027, in Concepción, Chile, hosted by Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB).

The meeting will bring together specialists in ichnology, sedimentology, paleontology and related sciences. The program includes postgraduate short courses, invited lectures, general sessions and field trips to classic localities of the Chilean geological record.

Scientific activities

The scientific program includes short courses, invited lectures, general sessions (oral and poster presentations) and a special activity in a dialogue format. The courses and special activity confirmed so far are listed below.

Short course

Ichnology: from foundational concepts to emerging perspectives

Taught by Gabriela Mángano and Luis Buatois · 10 hours

The course starts from the foundational concepts of the discipline and moves on to new ideas, approaches and emerging methodologies, with a focus on invertebrate ichnology and particularly on marine records. From an integrative perspective, it will trace the conceptual and methodological expansion of ichnology and discuss new applications and challenges, combining lectures with individual and group activities that reinforce the concepts presented.

Short course

Trace fossils in the paleoenvironmental and paleoecological interpretation of continental successions

Taught by Dr. Ricardo Melchor, with the collaboration of Dr. Manuel Rojas Manríquez · 5 hours

The course will address trace fossils as a key tool for reconstructing past continental environments and ecosystems, integrating ichnological, sedimentological and paleoecological criteria applied to fluvial, eolian, lacustrine and paleosol successions. Combining theoretical foundations with the analysis of case studies, participants will develop the tools needed to identify, interpret and contextualize continental trace fossil assemblages and ichnofabrics, strengthening their ability to carry out paleoenvironmental analysis of the geological record.

Special activity

Dialogues on life on Earth: a view from the ichnological record

Renata Netto, Noelia Carmona and Silvio Casadio in conversation with Luis Buatois and Gabriela Mángano

A conversation on the big questions about the origin and evolution of life on our planet, seen through the ichnological record. The dialogue will explore how trace fossils have made it possible to reconstruct key episodes in the biological history of the Earth, from the earliest evidence of animal activity to the complex ecological interactions that shaped ecosystems through geological time.
